The Cigar & Spirits Pairing Guide: What to Pour
with Every JR Tancrede Line
Blog post — hispaniolacigarsdistributor.com/blogs/news
A great cigar deserves a drink that can keep up with it. Pair the two well and each one makes the other better —
the char on a bourbon echoes the char in the tobacco, a dark rum's molasses leans into a cigar's natural
sweetness, a Cognac's dried fruit smooths out a bolder blend. Pair them poorly and you just have two good
things fighting each other.
We pulled this guide straight from our own tasting notes on all five JR Tancrede lines — real pairings we've
tested, not generic "bourbon goes with everything" advice. Here's what to pour, and why, for whichever cigar is
in your hand tonight.
PaPaDoc — Bold, Peppery, Chocolate & Espresso
PaPaDoc is the line that set the tone for JR Tancrede — bold and peppery up front, with deep chocolate and
espresso notes running through the smoke. It wants a drink with enough weight to stand up to the pepper and
enough sweetness to meet the chocolate halfway.
Pour: New Riff Bottled in Bond bourbon or George T. Stagg bourbon for a bourbon that can match the pepper;
Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve (Haiti) or Brugal 1888 (Dominican Republic) if you'd rather stay on-island
with the rum; Chairman's Reserve Spiced rum for extra warmth; or Founders Porter for a rich, creamy, non
spirit option that leans into the cigar's earthy, sweet side.
Why it works
High-proof bourbon's caramel and oak stand toe-to-toe with PaPaDoc's pepper instead of getting lost in it,
while the rum options bring a molasses sweetness that plays directly off the chocolate notes.
Ogou — Full-Bodied, Earthy, Built for a Warrior's Appetite
Ogou is JR Tancrede's most full-bodied, earthy line — the one built for a long night and a hearty appetite. It
needs a drink with real backbone.
Pour: Appleton Estate 21 Year Old or Angostura 15 Year Old dark rum, Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve
(Haiti), Brugal 1888 (Dominican Republic), or Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire spiced whiskey.
Why it works
A rich, aged dark rum matches Ogou's earthiness without disappearing into it, and the cinnamon kick in a
spiced whiskey gives the smoke something to push back against.
Baron Samedi — Dark, Mysterious, Coffee & Black Cherry
Named for the loa of the dead, Baron Samedi balances dark coffee notes against a streak of black cherry. Rum
is the traditional offering to Baron Samedi himself, so it's the natural place to start.
Pour: Appleton Estate 21 Year Old dark rum, Angostura 15 Year Old dark rum, Rhum Barbancourt Estate
Reserve (Haiti), or Brugal 1888 (Dominican Republic) for a complementary mix of sweetness and spice; or a
rich stout or espresso to enhance the deep roasted notes.
Why it works
Dark rum's sweetness meets the black cherry note head-on, while a stout or straight espresso doubles down on
the coffee instead of competing with it.
Roi Christophe — Smooth, Royal, Spice & an Oceanic Finish
Roi Christophe is the smoothest, most refined line in the lineup — spice up front, with a distinctive oceanic
finish that sets it apart. It's the one cigar in the collection that pairs equally well with brown spirits or a serious
red wine.
Pour: New Riff Bottled in Bond or George T. Stagg bourbon, Aged rum, a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon,
Hibiki 30 Year or Yamazaki 18 Year Japanese whisky, Rémy Martin XO Cognac, or Martell Cordon Bleu
Cognac.
Why it works
Japanese whisky's delicate balance and Cognac's dried-fruit sweetness both complement Roi Christophe's
smoothness instead of overpowering it — this is the line to reach for when you want to go a little more special
occasion.
Empereur Jacques 1er — Our Crown Jewel, Smooth & Sweet-Not-Spicy
Our 2025 Cigar of the Year and the most limited release in the lineup — just 5,000 produced annually.
Medium-bodied, smooth, and genuinely sweet rather than spicy, it calls for something equally refined.
Pour: Rémy Martin XO Cognac, Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac, Aged rum, Mendoza Malbec or a full-bodied
Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles, Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Montalcino, or Ribera del Duero), Hibiki 30 Year,
Yamazaki 18 Year, or sake.
Why it works
This is a cigar built for a moment that matters, so we pair it with drinks in the same category — a top-shelf
Cognac or an aged Japanese whisky that won't outshine it, but will sit right alongside it.
Build Your Own Tasting Flight
If you're hosting a cigar night and want to try more than one pairing, here's an easy flight to build around what
you likely already have on the bar:
• PaPaDoc + Founders Porter — start light and earthy
• Baron Samedi + Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve — move into dark rum territory
• Empereur Jacques 1er + Rémy Martin XO Cognac — finish on the smoothest note of the night
Three cigars, three very different spirits, one night that covers the full range of what JR Tancrede can do.
A Few Pairing Basics Worth Knowing
• Match the body, not just the flavor — a big, high-proof pour next to a mild cigar will flatten it; match
intensity to intensity.
• When in doubt, go sweet — cognac and aged rum both bring dried-fruit sweetness that plays well with
most of our lines.
• Let the cigar lead — pepper and spice (PaPaDoc, Ogou) want something with weight behind it;
smoother lines (Roi Christophe, Empereur Jacques 1er) reward a more delicate pour.
• Don't be afraid to add a little water — a splash of water in a high-proof bourbon or Cognac can open it
up without losing the pairing.
